Growth hacking is a marketing strategy that uses rapid experimentation across various channels and product development paths in order to determine the most effective way to scale and grow a business. Unlike conventional marketing, growth hacking focuses on goals, results, and profitability, not on processes, so it doesn’t always follow a methodology.

Growth hacking is a method of quickly testing and performing marketing and promotional tactics that are only centered on effective and fast market growth.

A growth hacker is less worried about the steps that should be taken or tools that should be used, and more interested in using analytical thinking for identifying growth opportunities. Growth hacking is often adopted by startups and companies who want to gain exposure and grow their revenues and customer bases rapidly while using low-cost solutions and keeping the cost per customer acquisition at a minimum.

A combination of methods can be used by growth hackers to achieve goals: viral marketing, social media, targeted advertising, reverse engineering, SEO, e-mail marketing, as well as content marketing, analytics, A/B testing, conversion rate optimization and many others.

What is growth hacking in digital marketing?

Growth Hacking is more of Mindset than Tool set. Growth hacking refers to a set of both conventional and unconventional marketing experiments that lead to growth of a business. Growth hackers are marketers, engineers and product managers that specifically focus on building and engaging the user base of a business.

Origin of Growth Hacking

Growth hacking started within the startups of Silicon Valley, but nowadays it has grown into a form of work that also applies to large, established companies.

The phrase was coined in 2010 by Sean Ellis, CEO, and founder of Growth Hackers. Growth hacking reaches conclusions FAST, with minimum expense.

For those startups, growth hacking was their way to beat the established order; the big corporates. They had fewer resources and budget to work the same way as the big competitors and therefore they had to find alternative ways to market their product.

Hence the word ‘hacking’ is used as a metaphor to grow in a different, cheaper and / or faster way.

Why is growth hacking also relevant to large companies nowadays?

Many companies see growth hacking as the perfect strategy for the 21st century, because you have to be flexible to avoid competitors, have to be quick to take chances and be data-driven because you do not want to spend thousands of euros on the basis of gut feeling.
